Accent lighting is defined by what it does not light
The difference between accent lighting and general lighting is intent. It is not coverage. One feature, chosen on purpose, with the surroundings left dark. The dark part is not a gap in the plan. It is the reason the lit thing stands out.The concept takes one sentence and a lot of discipline. Pick the handful worth seeing and resist adding to it. The pull is always to light one more thing, and holding

What tends to earn it
Some things reward being lit and plenty do not. Anything with surface relief responds well, because light raking across a rough surface creates shadow and shadow creates interest. Smooth surfaces reflect light without doing anything with it. Shape helps too: a strong silhouette, a distinct form.
The most common mistake
The failure mode is easy to describe: too many accents. One feature turns into six over a couple of conversations. Once the whole yard is bright, the emphasis is gone, which means the money bought brightness rather than effect. A disciplined plan says no more than it says yes.The best accent plans tend to look almost underdone on paper and exactly right on the property at night, which is why they are hard to sell and easy to appreciate.
Accent lighting and everything else on the property
Accent lighting is usually one layer of several. The other layers are path and bed lighting, security coverage, and the house itself. Accent lighting is the layer that adds intent.
Output is a design decision
Accent fixtures are usually dimmer than people expect. Your eyes adjust to darkness, so a small amount of light reads as a lot. The goal is to draw attention, not to interrogate the shrubbery.
From below or from above
Direction is a mood decision. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it feels staged, in a good way on the right subject. Light from above reads as ordinary, which is why it suits places people sit.
Plants grow. Accents need adjusting
Landscape accents are aimed at living things that keep changing. A shrub uplit perfectly this spring will have swallowed the fixture in three years. It is a small thing that makes a big visual difference. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.Aim gets checked the same way the design was made: by standing on the property after dark and looking.
